There are a lot of reasons why that’s the case. There was already some overrepresentation of white and Asian students in gifted and talented programs, but after the move to using this single test score measure, representation of Black and Latinx students plummeted. The framing sounded promising, but what happened in practice with the test is that the racial diversity in gifted and talented programs in New York City decreased. The Bloomberg administration framed as a way to expand access and make it fairer so that there weren’t biased judgment calls involved. Before that, there was a mix of different ways that students could get into the programs, like teacher and parent recommendations or other qualitative observations. Next, ostensibly in a bid to make things fairer, the Bloomberg administration started using a single standardized test with a citywide cut score to determine eligibility for gifted and talented programs. So when we look at places across the city that don’t have gifted and talented programs, that’s part of why those places were overlooked. This was a specific strategy to try and keep white, affluent, and more privileged families in the district. First, they expanded gifted and talented programs in a number of schools. When the Bloomberg administration took office, they made an effort to do a few things. Many people talk about “defending New York City’s great gifted and talented program,” but it actually hadn’t been in place for all that long. It’s important to go back far enough to understand how we got to the system that the de Blasio administration inherited. Fabiola Cineasīefore we get into this in more detail, can you first walk me through how we got here? How did this debate get so heated and become so central to NYC’s public education system? Halley Potter Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Potter, whose public policy research focuses on addressing educational inequality, talked to Vox about how New York City’s debate about gifted education became so heated and why it remains this way. I think we’ve already seen that just trying to expand the gifted program, as it has been, hasn’t worked as a lever to advance equity.” “It’s really striking to be in a school building where if you peer into a classroom, you can guess whether it’s the gifted and talented classroom just by looking at the faces of the kids in the room. “New York City’s approach to gifted and talented is unusual and the segregation is particularly egregious,” Halley Potter, a senior fellow at the left-leaning think tank the Century Foundation, told Vox. White and Asian kindergartners made up about a third of enrollment citywide but had more than 70 percent of gifted seats in the 2018-2019 school year. Students from poor families, students with disabilities, homeless students, and English language learners are underrepresented. There are only about 2,500 seats in the city’s gifted program available for about 65,000 kindergarteners in city schools each year, and Black or Hispanic students, who make up the majority of the public school system’s enrollment, made up only 16 percent of the kindergarten gifted program for the 2018-2019 school year. But the dispute is also part of a broader debate over equity in education. Students are typically tested once, at age 4, and divided from their classmates into a separate room or school for the rest of their elementary years. New York City’s gifted and talented program is unusual. Adams said before the election that he will do the opposite. In October, de Blasio announced, to praise and much criticism, that his administration would eliminate gifted and talented programs in an effort to promote racial and class equity. One of the different approaches between outgoing New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his successor Eric Adams, who took office on January 1, is the fate of the city’s gifted and talented programs in schools.

Pneumocystis encompasses a genus of opportunistic fungal pathogens that cause potentially lethal pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts. However, any patient with an impaired immunity, such as those receiving moderate doses of oral steroids for greater than 4 weeks or those receiving other immunosuppressive medications are at also at significant risk. Patients with hematologic disorders and solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are currently the most vulnerable groups at risk for developing this infection. This is mostly due to increased use of immunosuppressive medications to treat patients with autoimmune diseases, following bone marrow and solid organ transplantation, and in patients with hematological and solid malignancies. Despite the decreased number of cases among HIV-infected patients over the past decade, Pneumocystis pneumonia continues to be a serious problem in immunodeficient patients with other immunosuppressive conditions. However, Pneumocystis pneumonia still remains an important cause of severe pneumonia in patients with HIV infection and is still considered a principal AIDS-defining illness. In the 1990s, with widespread use of prophylaxis and the initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the treatment of HIV-infected patients, the number of cases in this specific population decreased. During this time period, prophylaxis against this organism was more generally instituted in high-risk patients. However, in the 1980s, with the onset of the HIV epidemic, Pneumocystis prevalence increased dramatically and became widely recognized as an opportunistic infection that caused potentially life-treating pneumonia in patients with impaired immunity. In the 1960–1970s additional cases were described in adults and children with hematological malignancies, but Pneumocystis pneumonia was still considered a rare disease. At that time, only anecdotal cases were reported in adults and usually these patients had a baseline malignancy that led to a malnourished state. This unusual lung infection was known as plasma cellular interstitial pneumonitis of the newborn, and was characterized by severe respiratory distress and cyanosis with little or no fever and no pathognomic physical signs. Although the organism was discovered in the early 1900s, the first cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia in humans were initially recognized in Central Europe after the Second World War in premature and malnourished infants. Pneumocystis is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes an often-lethal pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts. Point and lifetime prevalence rates of pathological gambling are reported to be as high as 1.4 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively. Results and discussion: The prevalence of pathological gambling seems to be increasing with the spread of legalized gambling casinos are now operating in 27 states. To improve recognition and treatment of pathological gambling, the authors reviewed the literature on its prevalence, assessment, and treatment. They have cotton-like soft peelable layers on the inside and a delicious buttery taste. These buttermilk biscuits are baked till golden, which gives them a nice crispy exterior. Other than that, I basically kept the recipe the same. Also, instead of using both baking powder and baking soda, I went with straight baking powder. So for the second attempt, I decreased the amount of buttermilk to keep the butter and flour ratio the same because I like my biscuits buttery. The first time I made these biscuits, I had to add 1/4 cup more flour. This technique is originally from Cook’s Illustrated by Chris Kimball, and is super quick and easy, especially in comparison to doing it manually with a pastry cutter. The result is the same as if you were to cut the butter until it resembles coarse meal, but you actually get a more of a uniform texture. You then just stir the slurry solution into the dry ingredients. In doing so, you create globules of butter. Instead of cutting your butter into the dry ingredients by using a pastry cutter or food processor, you melt the butter and stir it into iced cold buttermilk. I first came across this interesting way of making biscuits on The Cafe Sucre Farine. Find out the secret technique as to why these are the easiest buttermilk biscuits you’ll ever make. Bake until golden, rotating once, 20 to 24 minutes. These buttermilk biscuits are soft, flaky and delightfully buttery. Arrange biscuits snugly in pan (to help them stay upright). Gather together scraps, and repeat to cut out more biscuits (do not reuse scraps more than once).īake the biscuits: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. With a floured 2-inch biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits as close together as possible. (If dough is too sticky, work in up to 1/4 cup additional flour.) Shape into a disk, and pat to an even 1-inch thickness. Shape the biscuits: Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface, and knead very gently until dough comes together but is still slightly lumpy, five or six times. In a small bowl, whisk together sweet potato purée and buttermilk stir quickly into flour mixture until combined (do not overmix). With a pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal, with some pea-sized lumps of butter remaining. Make the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Rather than waste it, measure it out into zipper bags or freezer-safe containers, and store it away for the next time you need just a little bit. Luckily, I found a way to do double duty: why not combine the bread and the sweet potatoes in one dish? That’s a win win if I do say so myself.Īnother plus? These biscuits were fabulous when smothered with the vanilla pecan butter we made for the Brussels sprouts (recipe coming soon!).ĭid you know that buttermilk is easily frozen? You know, because buttermilk always comes in quart-size or larger containers and yet the recipes that use it call for much, much less. And not having them on Thanksgiving makes me sad. Cooking a full Thanksgiving meal for 3, we have to make some sacrifices. Rotten Returns: The Devil Is in The Per-Theater-Average Details For a Number of Under-Performers Though the industry is certainly hoping that all the films on that list will be knocked down two notches sometime after Memorial Day weekend with the releases of A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella. The Disney film has now officially surpassed Tom & Jerry to become the second-highest grossing film of 2021 and the fifth-highest of the pandemic. The lowest since then was Raya and the Last Dragon’s third weekend victory, with $5.12 million. Assuming Spiral holds on to a narrow margin for first place next week we could be looking at the lowest number 1 gross since the weekend of February 19, when The Croods: A New Age made $1.71 million. Wrath of Man just dropped 55% from its number 1 perch last weekend to gross $3.7 million this weekend. The last five films in the Saw series dropped between 60.6% and 67.6% after their first weekends. But do not expect this film to chug along the way Nobody’s $6.82 million opening did to over $25 million, so far. Heck, that makes it good enough for the fifth best opening of the year. It is also better than last week’s Wrath of Man ($8.3 million). In terms of horror comps for 2021, a $8.7 million start is certainly better than The Unholy ($2.35 million) or Separation ($1.8 million). Though: Is it the pandemic or are people just tired of the Jigsaw shtick altogether? But it was widely expected to come somewhere in the vicinity of those Saw VI opening numbers. Nobody expected Spiral: From the Book of Saw to approach those lofty numbers, even on the downslope of the pandemic. After James Wan’s original opened to $18.2 million in 2004, the next four entries opened between $30 million and $34 million. The previous low for the franchise was Saw VI ($14.1 million), when people decided they would rather have a Paranormal Activity film for their October horror than another Saw entry. The Saw series was on a seven-year hiatus after “The Final Chapter” when Jigsaw was launched in 2017 to a $16.6 million start. King of the Crop: Spiral Wins the Weekend But Leaves Questions In Its Wake Instead, the latest Saw film, Spiral, looks to become another footnote suggesting that even brand names are not bringing back people to theaters. Only four films this year have managed to open to more than $10 million and if the Saw series has anything in common with Raya and the Last Dragon it may be the disappointment in not being able to join that exclusive club in 2021. Masks are coming off in certain locations and more seats may be opening up in movie theaters but the films themselves are still not drawing much of an audience. The rear-most strap to the saddle rails has a metal-buckle redundant strap so that all that stress isn’t handled solely by the plastic buckle. Most the straps in the photo stay with the rack, the bag is just a bag with a roll-top closure that interfaces with the strap system. It is tolerably light, very stiff laterally, and pivots up and down easily so the bag can come out. I ended up using the bottom half of a very old Specialized FSR swingarm, bolted onto an Axiom Trekker seatpost clamp, which replaces the blue clamp seen in the first photo when the saddlebag is in use. I have a Henry Shires TarpTent Moment, and while it’s light, it packs long (the sleeping bag and pad are also in there). Building on pro_out’s idea posted last year sometime, I decided on half rack/half bag, mostly because a typical saddle bag design is A) too complicated for me to sew with my ancient machine and B) I was trying to fit something almost 20″ long in there, not possible in most saddlebags. Yet more have extra features, such as built-in voice assistants that can answer your questions, send messages and turn up the volume. Others build on this with electronic help, called active noise cancellation (ANC). Some fit so snugly into your ears that they keep the outside world out by a process of noise isolation. True wireless earbuds, as they’re called when they don’t have any wires at all, are lightweight and often offer great comfort. Now, they’re more portable than ever, and in-ear headphones offer the highest level of portability, fitting comfortably inside your pocket. But ever since smartphone manufacturers started ditching the headphone jack on their handsets, headphones and earphones have gone wireless. This is an easy win for the AirPods Pro.There was a time when using headphones meant having to be permanently tethered to your phone, constantly untangling cables as you go. Higher volume means you're less able to separate subtle variations in the audio track and you'll start introducing distortion. With more sound leakage, you'll need to output a higher volume to compensate for all of the extraneous noise. The silicone tips do a great job of sealing off your ear from ambient noises, something that's simply not possible with the regular AirPods. Even if you don't factor in the active noise cancellation, the AirPods Pro still offer better passive noise isolation than the AirPods because of the design of the eartips. Simply put, for very good sound, you need good noise isolation. The AirPods Pro features better sound quality They rest on the outer rim of your ear and don't stay in place as well. The AirPods, on the other hand, have no adjustable eartips at all. They also fit snugly in your ear to help create the proper seal for the noise cancellation to work optimally. The AirPods Pro have replaceable silicone ear tips that can be swapped out for different sizes depending on your ear. This one's another obvious win for the AirPods Pro. Being able to isolate the background noise while listening to your music is an absolute game changer. The AirPods Pro has a key feature that the AirPods do not have, and that is active noise cancellation. The AirPods Pro feature active (and passive) noise isolation The improvements easily justify the price premium. AirPods Pro vs AirPods (3rd Gen)Īt this price, the AirPods Pro cost only $30 more than the Apple AirPods (3rd gen). Other upgrades include Bluetooth 5.3, more ear tip sizes, "Find My" support, capacitive touch sensors on the earbuds, and skin detection sensors that reduce the chances of the AirPods Pro accidentally turning on. The biggest improvement is the new Apple H2 chip, which combined with a refined low distortion driver and amp offer better audio quality than the standard AirPods. The 2nd generation model has several incremental upgrades over the 1st gen. If there are moments where noise cancellation might be a hindrance, the AirPods Pro features an "Adaptive Transparency Mode," which amplifies ambient sound so that you can better hear your surroundings. Aside from the more expensive and bulkier Max, the Pro is the only Airpods with active noise cancelling technology. "Truly wireless" earbuds have no wires whatsoever, even to each other. The Apple AirPods Pro is one of the best sounding "truly wireless" earbuds you'll find, especially at this price point. Other small upgrades include dust resistance and lossless audio support when paired with Apple’s upcoming and massively expensive Vision Pro headset. For people who want to bring along a single charging cable for all of their mobile devices, this is a godsend. Apple has replaced the proprietary Lightning port with the more universal USB Type-C. The new AirPods Pro is still called a "2nd gen" model, but with one key update. |
